Some gold prospectors get tired of crouching down and getting wet panning in the cold river water. Beyond that, there are places where there is plenty of gold but no water to pan gold with. In those cases a gold metal detector can be an invaluable tool. In fact, you are more likely to find a nice sized gold nugget with a metal detector these days than you are panning in a river. But that doesn’t mean using a metal detector in and around a river can’t be very profitable. The old timers sure panned the heck out of all those rivers for years and years and although gold does filter back in over time, it’s always hard to find nuggets panning. Plus, back in the day, they didn’t have the efficient tools we have now, such as the regal metal detector! Many a prospector has found beautiful large nuggets in the trailing piles of past gold prospectors…meaning they found nuggets in the old “trash” rock piles because they had metal detectors! Then there are all the dried up riverbeds that are great for using metal detectors. But what’s even better is you don’t have to drive off to your favorite gold bearing river or dry wash to find treasure with a metal detector. You can drive, or better yet walk, down to your local parks or beaches and even school playgrounds (on the weekends) and find plenty of really cool things. Most often it will be change or jewelry but often times those can be very old and collectible. Metal detectors can get pretty expensive, up to over $5,000 for the premium ones, but you can still get a decent one for a few hundred dollars. But get the best one that fits your budget or you’ll be kicking yourself as soon as you are ready to upgrade…which always seems way too soon!
